Royal Torbay Yacht Club offers some of the most extensive, competitive, and well-managed club racing to be found in the South West. The club has a strong racing focus and is keen to attract new sailors and boats to join our regular racing programme running from April through to New Year’s Day.
Our racing fleets of IRC Yachts, Cruisers, Sportsboats, SB20s, PY Dinghies and Junior Classes are always keen to get out on the water and go racing. There are always crewing opportunities for new members, especially on Yachts and Sportsboats. The club continually seeks to develop its existing classes and introduce new classes where they complement existing fleets.
Wednesday Evenings
Wednesday evening racing is ever popular for all classes, with racing scheduled from April 1st to Mid-September.
Sunday Mornings
Racing in the bay for IRC, Cruisers and Sportsboats takes place on Sundays from April 1st to December.
Juniors
Racing occurs on Wednesday evenings and specified Saturdays throughout the year as part of the exciting Squadron 13 programme. They can practice and develop their skills in a structured and safe environment.
Racing in and around the bay
The three local clubs have agreed to encourage participation in the regattas organised by them, dates for 2023 are POSH at Paignton Sailing Club, our own Torbay Royal Regatta on 18th -21st August, and Torbay Dinghy Regatta on 7th – 8th October.
Coastal Racing
For those looking to do some racing out of the bay by joining other local clubs for the Torbay and Dart Combined Clubs Series of 9 races, dates are included in the club programme. These include our own “Smugglers Run” to Teignmouth and weekend races to Plymouth, Salcombe and Dartmouth, and our new race introduced in 2021 “The Eddystone Night Race”. A Friday night race in the middle of summer down to the lighthouse, round it and back! NoRs and SIs available from the website of organising clubs.
Offshore Week
Held in July, Offshore Week is a popular and sociable sailing week for both IRC and Cruiser classes, where the fleet is joined by boats from other local clubs. Racing includes the Channel Race to St Peter Port and other races around the Channel Islands and Brittany and Normandy’s ports.
The culmination of all club racing is the Annual Club Prizegiving dinner in November for all classes and the presentation of the much coveted Champion of Champions Trophy, with Squadron 13 holding its own very special evening during October.
