“ The Leeds Trophy was presented to Graham Jenkins by Phil Rumbelow, Commodore Royal Torbay Yacht Club at the club’s annual prizegiving“

I was so overwhelmed by the presentation of the Leeds Trophy by the Club that I should have said a few words acknowledging some of the people I must thank for all they taught me over the 60 odd years.  One is only as good as those who have helped you along the way.

Simon Day, Adrian Hinkins and Peter Cullen in Maelstrom (14 international regattas in 1971/1972) and Taranaki (1st GRP Dragon in the UK) showed me how to win after years of moderate performance.  With Simon Jefferies and Chris Edwards in Heuschrecke we enjoyed great seasons as with John Tilbrook who crewed for me in Grasshopper and Basilisk for over 10 years.

Percy Bevans and Nigel Wollen taught me to Race Officer.  Peter Rumbelow magnificently organised my first major Championship as PRO.  John Pollard’s and Steve Birbeck’s mums, Graham Tucker, Mike Clapham and others were part of my regular excellent team for events.  Peter and Kate Nicholas, Jenny Vowden and Priscilla Porteous were invaluable members of my organisation team for the success of the Dragon Europeans (1978) and Gold Cup (1995).

Finally Bob Penfold and Bill Butcher have kindly encouraged me onto the water as mark layer despite my advancing years.

To all I am very grateful together with many others, including all the Commodores since 1957.

Graham Jenkins
